This file contains program tips and troubleshooting for running the Greetings program and for obtaining the best quality printouts for your Greetings documents.
Help Runs!
* IF HELP WON╒T RUN - You can start the Help application by double-clicking on the Greetings Help file, even if Greetings is not running. If help won't run while Greetings is open, TURN ON VIRTUAL MEMORY. See immediately below for details!
Program Troubleshooting
* TURN ON VIRTUAL MEMORY - Look for Control Panels under the Apple menu in the top left corner of your menubar. Select Memory. Turn on Virtual Memory, and click on the Use Defaults button. Greetings needs 8 Mb of physical RAM and a minimum of16 Mb of total memory, in order to run. For best results, ensure that your total memory is double the amount of your physical installed memory -- which is what you get if you click on the Use Defaults button.
If you cannot turn on virtual memory, or cannot raise it beyond a limit, you may be out of room on your hard drive. Free up space, then try again.
On some Macintoshes, you may need to turn on 32-bit addressing before you can increase the virtual memory size beyond a certain limit. You may need to get the 32-bit addressing extension from Apple, or update to System 7.5.3, in order to do this. Please contact your Apple dealer.
* REBUILD THE DESKTOP - Have you tried this? Apple recommends rebuilding the desktop regularly, yet few Mac owners know this, fewer yet know how and do it. It cures a host of small ills and irritations.
To rebuild the desktop, select Restart in the Finder╒s Special menu. As you restart, hold down the Option and Command keys, both, until the system asks if you want to rebuild. Click on yes, of course. If you have more than one hard drive, the rebuild question comes up again; we recommend rebuilding, so say yes.
You will get a warning that you will lose comments if you rebuild, unless you have System 7.5.3. Few people use this feature, so please proceed. If you are one of the people who do rely on comments, please upgrade to System 7.5.3.
* CANNOT START PROGRAM╩╤ If you have trouble starting the Greetings program (cannot start it at all or get an error message), this usually indicates you do not have enough available physical RAM to start the application. Try closing any other currently running applications and turning off some of your File Extensions in the Apple Control Panel. Then try restarting the program. If you still get an error message, make sure that you have a default printer selected in the Apple Control Panel╩╤ Greetings will not be able to start unless you have a default printer selected.
* CANNOT FIND ╥Microsoft_OLE2╙╩╤ If Greetings will not start because you get this error message, try turning on virtual memory. If that does not work, try turning off network-related extensions. In particular, turn off the MailBox and PowerTalk extensions. You can temporarily turn off extensions by holding down the spacebar as your Mac starts up; this invokes the Extensions Manager, where you can switch off control panels and extensions, and turn them on again later.
* PROGRAM RUNS SLOW╩╤ This is likely a combination of your computer processor's speed and the amount of memory you have available. The best way to try to correct this is to increase your available memory. To increase your available memory for the Greetings program, exit the program (if you have it running). Then click on it in the Greetings folder to select it. Then, choose Get Info from the File menu on the menu bar. For the Preferred application memory size, you may increase the suggested value, but should not set it lower.
Also, make sure that you have Virtual Memory turned "on" in your Control Panel. Try increasing the Cache size and the Virtual Memory swap file size. These will both give you faster performance and better printed output.
* CANNOT INSERT A GRAPHIC╩╤ This is a memory problem. Follow the same remedy noted above for PROGRAM RUNS SLOWLY to correct this problem. Copy and Paste may help get a graphic into Greetings, if the format is not one Greetings supports. That is, copy the image in another program, then paste it in Greetings.
* INCOMPATIBLE PROGRAMS╩╤ Some INIT╒s and applications may not coexist well with Greetings, e.g., RAM Doubler¬, modem or fax software, ATM. You can temporarily turn off extensions by holding down the spacebar as your Mac starts up; this invokes the Extensions Manager, where you can switch off control panels and extensions, and turn them on again later. Users of System 7.0 or 7.1 (without Extensions Manager) should remove suspect INIT's from the Extensions folder and restart the Mac.
* OTHER PROBLEM NOT LISTED HERE╩╤ Most printing and program problems are due to insufficient memory. Again, follow the steps listed above for correcting the PROGRAM RUNS SLOWLY problem to increase your available memory to see if this corrects the problem.
Printing Tips
* OBJECTS CUT OFF THE PAGE╩╤ If your document appears cut off on the printout, make sure that you've selected the proper project layout (from within the Greetings program, located on the File menu). Also make sure that you've selected the correct page orientation (tall or wide) after selecting the Print option. You should also check to make sure that the objects being cut off are within the printer margins displayed on the Greetings program screen╩╤ any objects that are placed outside of this printer margin will not be printed.
* LOW MEMORY╩╤ If you notice any of the follow conditions on your printed documents, it indicates that you do not have enough memory to print the document as you've designed it. To increase your available memory for the Greetings program, exit the program (if you have it running). Then click on it in the Greetings folder to select it. Then, choose Get Info from the File menu on the menu bar. For the Preferred application memory size, you may increase the suggested value but should not set it lower.
Also, make sure that you have Virtual Memory turned "on" in your Control Panel. Try increasing the Cache size and the Virtual Memory swap file size. These will both give you faster performance and better printed output.
Typical printing problems related to insufficient memory:
1. Graphics are not printing.
2. Flipped text does not print flipped (or does not print properly).
3. Shaped text does print in the selected shape (or does not print properly).
4. Printing is slow.
* BLACK & WHITE PRINTERS╩╤ If you have a black and white printer that is not capable of grayscaling (such as a black and white ImageWriter), the Greetings program may have trouble printing images and flipped/shaped text properly. The best solution to this problem is to get an color cartridge for your printer if one is available.
